San Jacinto Wildlife Area

We found some new trails this morning at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area in Riverside County. Nice, open, and well maintained trails made for a very enjoyable hike. Ginger, Odie, and I have much more to explore here in the months to come. It was a pleasant morning, not too hot yet, and a little hazy. But I loved the open views and wildness of the place. The dogs were thrilled and could hardly contain their excitement for adventure.

These rocks jutting out of a hill were one of the sites along the trail. The grasses are pretty dry right now, and I look forward to seeing this place after the Spring rains when everything is green again. I also know that there are rattlesnakes everywhere, and so I don't dare take the dogs off the trail to explore the hills. This wildlife area is for the wildlife. We're just visiting.

Here, Odie and Ginger are enjoying their hike as they head back to the truck. I really believe that it's very good for dogs to get out on trails and experience natural settings from time to time. It's good for their spirit. (And ours!) I never forget that dogs are relatives of the wolf, and share some of the same instincts and connection to Nature. This trip tired them both out, however, and they came home and fell asleep on the sofa for the afternoon, enjoying their air-conditioned home. I love happy dogs!
